Reading

Today I am going to talk about how to teach the reading material in Module 3. I’ll be ready to begin this lesson from 6 parts:Analysis of the teaching material, the students ,the teaching methods and aids,the studying methods, the teaching procedure, and Blackboard design.

Teaching Material

The topic of this unit is about Body Language and non-verbalCommunication, it is from Module 3 of New Standard English for Senior Students Book Four,which includes saying hello to each other,clapping as well as cultural awareness. we can help the students know how people in different countries greet each other in their daily life by learning this reading passage.Reading ability an important content of senior reading study. So reading is important part in the whole teaching .

By learning this reading passage, I can help the students to achieve the following goals, so let’s go to the next part :

Teaching aims:

The knowledge objects of learning this passage are to enable the students to learn different greetings around the world,help the students know body language is also very important in communication.

The ability objects of learning this reading passage are to improve the students’ reading ability.and develop students’ communicative ability.

The moral object of learning this passage is to help the students to know that when we are in a foreign country, we must pay attention to their body language. Following the customs will help us communicate with people and make our stay there much more pleasant and comfortable.

In the teaching process ,teacher should help students master the important points and break through the difficult points,as follows:

Teaching important point is improving the students’ reading ability by skimming’ scanning and careful reading

Teaching difficult point is getting the students to grasp the main idea and the key words of each paragraph as quickly as possible.

In order to create a pleasant English learning atmosphere, Communicative Approach、Task-based teaching approach、Multi-media assistant teaching approach will be adopted in my class .

Students will adopt the learning strategy of participation、cooperation、exploration. They can take part in the activities and finish the task in pairs or in groups ,improve their integrative language using ability .

According to the new curriculum standard ,the students is the masters and the teacher acts as the director. I design the following teaching procedures :

Step 1: Lead in

In order to arouse the students’ interest in the reading passage and make them eager to know the importance of body language and different ways of greetings in different countries, I will give the students a performance without saying anything first then ask the students to guess what my performance is about. After the performance I will ask the students why they can understand me though I haven’t said anything. Then students can tell me that I have made myself understood by using my gestures and movements.

Step 2:while-reading

Task 1:Skimming

Doing fast reading is a good way to train the students’ ability of getting information within very short time.

First I will ask the students to look through the passage and choose the best title for the passage.

Second students are asked to find out the main idea of each paragraph.(this will be shown on the screen) This is also a good way to train the students reading comprehension especially the ability of understanding about the layout of this reading.

After the students are aware of the structure of the reading passage, I will give the students enough time to read the text.

Task 2: scanning

In oder to help the students understand the passage better, I will deal with the reading passage paragraph by paragraph.

For paragraph 1, ask the students to Fill in the blanks . So here are the blanks( this will be shown on the screen), then answer in pairs.

For paragraph 2-paragraph 4 I will ask the students to finish a table (which will be shown on the screen)

For the last paragraph I will ask the students to remember body language is fascinating and people can give away much more by their gestures than their words.

Task 3:questions

There are always some diffcult parts in the reading. So in order to make the students understand the passage better I will ask the students to raise two questions based on Paragraph 2, both beginning with “why…?(students may raise questions like Why do Europeans and Americans use their right hands to greet others ? And why does every culture has developed a fromal way to greet strangers?

As the students know the whole reading passage better, I will go to finish the next task:

Step 3 post-reading

Task1:act

Some students will be asked to come to the front to act out how people in the countries mentioned in the passage greet each other. While the students are performing ,others have to figure out which countries they are from and describe their performance in English.While they do this, they have to use the information from the passage again, so this is also a good way to go over the whole reading.

Task 2:discussion

Students work in groups of four and tell each other""Is body language important for us students? why?""After the students’ discussion , a representative from each group may demonstrate their results to us. This is a good way to train students’ ability of team work.

After that, I will give the conclusion that students must remember it is important to learn some information about body language,since we are learnig English, we must know a lot about body language of English native speakers, so that we can communicate with them better some day. Even between students and teachers ,body language is also important when we are having lessons we can use our body language more to communicate instead of using words.

Step4 :Homework

Find out more ways of greeting in the different cultures.Preview the language points in the reading.

The last part is blackboard design

The title of this reading passage is on the top of the blackboard. Divide the blackboard into 2 parts. The left part is for some key words, while the right part is for the screen.
